Each spring, The Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges hosts approximately one hundred high school and independent guidance counselors from across the country during its annual introduction to Lehigh Valley colleges and universities program. The 2010 program marks the 29th year for the LVAIC sponsored program. Since its inception, nearly 1,600 counselors have visited the LVAIC campuses.
During the intensive three day tours, counselors spend approximately one half day on each of the Association members' campuses learning firsthand from faculty, students and administrators about curricular and out-of-class programs, as well as, the historical and cultural characteristics that make each campus unique. The group is informed of the benefits to students available through the collaborative programs of the 36 year old consortium. Counselors also learn about the strengths of the Lehigh Valley region including diversity of workforce potential for graduates of the local colleges, revitalization of the three metropolitan areas and the myriad social and cultural events.
According to Muhlenberg College Dean of Admission, Christopher Hooker-Haring, the LVAIC tour is recognized as one of the most respected programs in the country by the National Association of College Admissions Counselors. Dean Hooker-Haring adds, "This is a terrific event for all of the Lehigh Valley institutions. Over the years, it has generated tremendous goodwill among high school counselors from all over the country. I know that we, at Muhlenberg, have enrolled students for the first time from a particular school because a counselor was impressed by the introduction to us through this program. Each year, that circle of counselors who are shown the value, quality of academics and overall appeal of the LVAIC institutions grows larger and farther afield."
The event is organized by the Directors of Admissions at each of the six schools and is hosted by LVAIC staff. Interested counselors may contact the LVAIC office to learn more about the program. Counselors are given an opportunity to attend one of the two tour programs held in April. Invitations to the program are mailed to selected counselors in late January.
